Waterloo is extremely proud to be the location for Iowa's first all-district IB program. Our two high schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that both schools believe is important for our students.

Through this program, we can guarantee that students will be able to write across the curriculum. When students complete the IB diploma program, we have found they are better prepared for college because they have learned time management, discussion skills, and are better writers.

We welcome questions and would invite you to visit our classrooms to see the great work that is taking place.

IB Mission Statement

The International Baccalaureate® aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

Our History

East and West High Schools were authorized for the IB Diploma Program in 2014. Our first cohort graduated in 2016 and at this point we have had two cohorts graduate. Many of our scores are above the world average. Last spring we had 88% of our students earn the IB diploma. We are continuing to add courses and teachers to the program as we increase our student numbers.
